Without a doubt, one of the most amazing tours in Tanzania—and the entire world—is the trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro. Standing tall at 19,341 feet above sea level, this mountain offers climbers an unforgettable adventure crossing five ecological zones in a spectacular ascent to reach the highest point of Africa. Here is a list of 10 incredible sites this mountain has to offer:

1) The Rain Forest

The routes up Kilimanjaro start in the rainforest region, which is home to many different species of flora and fauna. During the rainy season from April to May and in November the rainforest can receive up to 80 inches of precipitation annually.

2) Zebra Rock

A popular landmark on the Marangu Route, Zebra Rock gets its name from the white streaks left on the black lava rock resembling a zebra. The white streaks come from the mineral rich water that flows down it.

3) Colobus Monkeys

The rich rainforest region is home to the Colobus monkey. A beautiful black and white old-world monkey, these herbivorous primates spend their time foraging the treetops for fruit, leaves, flowers and twigs. They are an important part of the eco system.

4) Shira Plateau

On the western side of Kilimanjaro is the Shira plateau, a caldera, which is a collapsed volcanic crater. Trekking across the Shira is a trip back in geological time. It was the first of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanoes to explode 500,000 years ago.

5) Dendrosenecio Kilimanjari

Near the top of Kilimanjaro, trekkers will find a forest of alien looking plants that are adapted only for their life on this mountain of Africa. The giant groundsels adapted to exist amongst the frost that settles near the top of Kilimanjaro every night.

6) Lava Tower

Climbing this volcanic rock formation is a fun and easy diversion for Kilimanjaro adventurists.

7) 2008 Plane Crash

Along the saddle between Uhuru and Mawenzi, the wreckage remains of a small passenger plane eerily lays for hikers to see. The plane was carrying four passengers and the pilot when it crashed into Kilimanjaro in November of 2008.

8) Kibo Crater

Kibo is the largest of the three volcanic cones on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is located near the summit of the mountain.

9) Glaciers

Though much more expansive hundreds of years ago, the glaciers near the summit of Kilimanjaro are still a spectacular and breathtaking site to see.

10) Uhuru Peak

At 19,340 feet a green sign welcomes all trekkers who persevered and made it to the highest peak on Kilimanjaro. The end-goal for many climbers, Uhuru Peak symbolizes victory for many.
