A Destination Beyond Expectation – Charitable Kili Climb with Macon Dunnagan

Zara Tours is known for offering tourists a Kili climb like no other. Not only do we have some of the best porters available, we try to make sure that you are given the opportunity to experience special climbs throughout the year.

One of our most popular Kili climb options is a chance to take part in one of author Macon Dunnagan’s annual treks to this iconic mountain summit. This year, he will be climbing the Rongai Route in June.  Registration for the trip is now open, and we saved the best part for last: a portion of the fees paid by each participant will go to charity.

An Enduring Partnership

Dunnagan holds a special place in our hearts – a place hewn from the publication of his novel, Sons of Kilimanjaro. This story brings a whole new perspective to a Kili climb.

In the novel, four men decide to take on the mountain, and in doing so, they overcome personal struggles and are given the gift of a transcendent knowledge that can only come from embracing unusual experiences. The novel is inspirational without the trappings of bias or agenda. Dunnagan wanted other people to discover his love of the mountain and understand its role in his own life story.

If there’s anyone who understands what goes into a climb, it’s him. This beloved author and loving husband has climbed the mountain 16 times thus far, and he stands among the few climbers to have reached the summit twice within one month. Now, you can benefit from his wealth of technical and personal experience by participating in a climb.

Awareness & Philanthropy: A Climb with Purpose

Dunnagan’s story is one of art imitating life. His wife Michelle battled ovarian cancer, and as a result, he uses his Kilimanjaro climbs to raise awareness and funds for research into decoding and treating this disease.

A portion of every climber’s fees are donated to the American National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. When Zara Tours hosted this event in 2011, $250 of every climber’s trip cost was donated in Michelle’s honor. It is our hope to equal – if not exceed – that fundraising goal in 2014.

With that in mind, you can book your climb with Dunnagan for as long as spots are available during registration. The trip will run from June 24 to June 29, 2014. The cost includes everything except:

  • Tips for your guide, porters, cook, and other staff members
  • Costs associated with hotel accommodations
  • Any personal expenses

Book now to secure your spot on this one-of-a-kind Kili climb.

You will get the chance to share not only in the physical experience of trekking the mountain, but also in the emotional and spiritual journey that has made this mountain so special to Dunnagan and so many others. Check our website for details on this, and other unique excursions, offered through our organization.

We look forward to seeing you through to the summit – a destination beyond expectation.
